It's thought that the Tolix chair was first used in the weather forecasting room aboard a battleship, whether that story is true or just an old wife's tale is another matter! Whatever the story, during the mid 1900s the Tolix chair was supplied to bars, brasseries and cafes by breweries in exchange for selling their beer, a practice which ended in 1970.
The withdrawal of the Tolix chairs led to many, many fans complaining and lamenting the difficulty they now faced of finding the chairs so, due to popular demand, the original Xavier Pauchard 1934 Tolix chair was reissued in 1986.
