Cog is a candle holder that comes in two sizes and is fashioned from knurled discs, cones, rods and cogs. It stands straight and true, as a testament to the age of great British engineering, despite not being made in Britain. Oh the irony. Turned from solid aluminium which is then brass plated its apparent heft is belied by its weight. It is part of a series, by London based designer Tom Dixon, which explores our ever changing relationship with the industrial landscape. It alludes to how the miniaturisation of everything, and the endless softening of ware, leads us to forget that industry was once huge and uncompromising, noisy and belching, frightening in its brutal beauty and both the harbinger and precursor of the modern information age. It is thought a lot but not said enough, Tom Dixon is really rather clever.
