Founded in 2004 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rutzou, SPACE Copenhagen is a Danish design studio that works across multiple disciplines from furniture, lighting, and refined objects, to art installations and art direction, to interior design for private homes, hotels, and restaurants – including René Redzepi’s noma.
SPACE’s latest work include; 108 from Rene Redzepi and former Noma chef Kristian Baumann which opened in Copenhagen in summer 2016. For the 221-room hotel 11 Howard, which opened in spring 2016, SPACE designed the interiors as well as custom pieces, handmade in Denmark. True to form, SPACE lets beautiful materials and meticulously selected objects speak for themselves.
SPACE are currently working on a number of exciting interior projects including the Manhattan Loft Gardens opening in Stratford in London, which will feature two restaurants and a spa and is due to be completed in 2018; new hotel projects in Denmark; a residential project in America and their first project in Asia. In addition to interiors, SPACE has partnered with some of the world’s leading manufacturers and designed more than 50 iconic furniture pieces for Georg Jensen, Fredericia Furniture, Stellar Works, and Mater to name just a few. Most recently, SPACE Copenhagen designed the new SLOW Collection for Stellar Works during Salone del Mobile, Milan 2017.
Distinctly Scandinavian, SPACE’s design is modern and warm, rustic and elegant. The team uses enduring principles of Scandinavian design as fuel for boundary-breaking creative modernism. In every design, the firm forges a new path by balancing opposites - classic and modern, industrial and organic, matte and gloss, light and shade. While SPACE’s intuitive and imaginative approach means no two projects are alike, their work boasts clear signatures: natural materials, subdued colors, dramatic clarity, and meticulous craftsmanship.
