Neri & Hu takes inspiration from the tile patterns of Shanghai streets, a place where life literally happens.
The name of the collection corresponds to Jie 街, the Chinese character that embodies the essence of a city: the constant movement, dynamism and frenetic activity.
“The character “Jie” is made up of a radical and a phonetic character. The ancient ideograms of the Chinese Jie character depicts on one side the street as an intersection, evoking “life” at the crossroads, while the center portion of the character is made up of two “earth” characters whose ideogram shows a clay on potter’s wheel... a connection to the ceramic colors used by Neri&Hu in the series.”, according to Neri & Hu.

2006: founded in shanghai, neri&hu represents a new modern chinese aesthetic. founded by designers whose intent is to spark the potential in 'chinese design,' neri&hu seeks to evoke change. seeking top-quality materials and craftsmanship, most neri&hu products are hand made, a reflection of a place whose masters of trade can still be found waiting for patrons in the lanes of shanghai. neri&hu is the reinterpretation of the beauty in revealing raw material where clad is traditional, or exposing an object's frame where normally hidden, in examining history and its path, or in capturing an ordinary scene in a snapshot.
Driven by a singular desire and a very creative background, Nani established nanimarquina in 1987 with a clear goal: to design unique and surprising handcrafted rugs for people to enjoy.
The idea of blending contemporary design to traditional rugs was well received and soon nanimarquina embarked on the adventure of outsourcing production to those countries that offered cultural value and unlimited possibilities for rug craftsmanship.
