Everyone deserves a good, supportive chair

In developing the original Equa chair, introduced in 1984, designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick analyzed plenty of available seating options. “We found that office seating was becoming more specialized in terms of how people sit in chairs and the types of tasks they perform,” Don said. “We wanted the opposite; we believe that a chair has to allow a person to move around, perform a variety of tasks, and sit in a variety of positions throughout the day.”

Bill Stumpf

Bill Stumpf contact with Herman Miller began in 1970, when he joined the Herman Miller Research Corporation. In 1972 to set up their own company, after Stumpf design called Ergon's first set of ergonomic chairs. Later, he and Don Chadwick cooperation design breakthrough Equa and iconic Aeron seats. He is Lord also of the Ethospace office system designers.

Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company, which opened in 1905, since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of integrity, so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century, the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with “modern” furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the company produced pieces that would become classics of industrial design.
