Bertjan Pot(b.1975)of the Netherlands focuses in the material and production processes. He enjoys computer aesthetics and industrial production methods, but arrives at them without using them as a design tool.Almost all of his designs come from experiments in materials. His results often display merely the skin of his chosen material, creating translucence in his lighting and furniture, such as his popular Carbon Chair, Random Light, Random Chair, or Knitted lamp.In the case of the Random Light,a resin drained yarn is randomly coiled around and inflatable beach ball, creating a translucent 3D fabric. The ball is then deflated and extracted from a round opening in the lamp, leaving only the“skin.”
Founded in 2001 by complementing personalities Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers, Moooi is named after the native Dutch word for “beautiful”. According to the company, “the third ‘o’ in the brand name stands for an extra value in terms of beauty & uniqueness.” In additon to Wanders’ work, Moooi has produced work from Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Ross Lovegrove and Studio Job. Ultimately, Wanders is responsible for the overall design selection process.
