corona lounger chair
Design Poul M Volther,
1962
Stainless steel, leather
When Poul M. Volther created Corona in 1964 the chair was an obvious hit. Corona was light yet had a sculptural gravity that was noteasily forgotten. This combination made Corona a star in countless movies, fashion series and music videos; in fact, Corona probably has the most impressive stage career of all Erik Jorgensen's products. Corona's success is partly due to its fusion of technical cool and warm and inviting form that refers directly to the human anatomy with its spine and ribs.

Poul M. Volther (2 January 1923 - 23 January 2001) was a Danish furniture designer who is remembered above all for his iconic Corona Chair.First trained as a cabinetmaker, Volther studied furniture design at the Arts and Crafts School in Copenhagen. A believer in Functionalism, he avoided short-lived aesthetic trends, concentrating on the simple crafting of fine materials. As a teacher at Denmark's Design School, he encouraged hundreds of students to aim for high quality craftsmanship. With the support of designer Hans Wegner, he was employed from 1949 by the cooperative FDB, working in their the design studio under the leadship of Børge Mogensen. Mogensen left FDB in 1959, leaving Volther in charge. He went on to design a series of Windsor chairs, rather simpler in style than Mogensen's own. He also designed a wide variety of armchairs and sofas which can still be seen in homes throughout Denmark.

The milestone in the history of ERIKJØRGENSEN is the OX cow chair - designed by HANS J. WEGNER in 1960. Hans J. Wegner contacted Erik Jørgensen in 1988. It turns out that the cow chair is particularly difficult to decorate. However, Erik is very optimistic and knows to use his expertise to make improvements. In the second year, the cow chair was launched at the International Furniture Fair in Milan and immediately became a design idol. Erik Jørgensen saw something unique in the beautiful shape and detail of the Corona chair. The design is light, but at the same time it has a sculptural depth that impresses people. Not surprisingly, the Corona chair is Erik Jørgensen's furniture, most often found in movies and TV shows, including the 1971 thriller Carnal Knowledge, starring Jack Nicholson, popular TV shows, Mad Men, and the Danish show The check kill.
